Do dogs need a coat in winter?

8 Winter Coats for Dogs to Stay Warm in the Cold | great pet care (1)

Despite their built-in fur coats,Dogs are not immune to the cold.. In fact, if the winter chill is making you uncomfortably cold, chances are your dog is feeling the same.

However, there is no single answer to winter coats for dogs because so many factors come into play.

According to dog trainer Steffi Trott, founder ofSpiritDog-TrainingWhether your dog needs a winter coat or not depends on three main factors:

  • your ability to stay warm (which is often affected by breed, age, coat, etc.)
  • Temperature, precipitation and wind chill where you live
  • your activity level

"Some breeds are born to be comfortable in the cold," says Trott. "Dogs like huskies, Great Pyrenees or Saint Bernards have a thick double coat that makes them comfortable to wear, even in very low temperatures."

"If your dog is a healthy adult Northern breed dog or livestock guardian, it probably doesn't need a winter coat," she advises.

“On the other hand, there are many breeds with medium to fine single or double coats. A winter coat may be required for these. This is especially true for puppies younger than six months or older dogs. Their ability to regulate their body temperature can be reduced and they freeze more easily,” warns Trott.

"Even if your dog has a fine single or double coat, if it's raining or snowing, he can get cold very quickly," he says. "In that case, you should definitely wear a waterproof coat."

It's also important to think about the types of activities your dog can do while wearing a coat. "Keep in mind that a dog that is actively moving is less likely to get cold than a dog that is standing still or even lying down in the cold," says Trott.

“For example, a high-energy, fine-coated breed like a Doberman might be perfectly fine with a brisk 30-minute walk through the snow without a winter coat. On the other hand, if the same dog was left outside in the garden in the snow, it would get very cold very quickly! says Trot.

Dog winter coat buying guide

8 Winter Coats for Dogs to Stay Warm in the Cold | great pet care (10)

Any item your dog wears requires some thought before clicking the "Buy Now" button. Choosing a winter dog coat really depends on your dog, your area, and the type of activities your dog is likely to engage in when the weather turns cold.

If you know the weather is going to get cold and wet, look for something that is insulated and waterproof. These tend to be more “practical” coats that prioritize function over fashion. If the winters are mild, your dog can wear something lighter. If in doubt, speak to your vet, who will be able to advise you on your specific dog.

No matter what type of dog coat you choose, the key is taking the right measurements to ensure a good fit. Always follow the size guide for the brand you are interested in as they can vary significantly. Use a soft cloth measuring tape and write down at least the manufacturer's measurements, usually your dog's chest and length.

Handmade coats may require you to take more measurements to get an accurate fit. It's also worth reading customer reviews to see if the coats are generally true to size.

A coat made from stretch material offers a little leeway in sizing, but non-stretch coats made from canvas or ripstop fabric can restrict your dog's freedom of movement if they are too small.

Dog winter coat tips for success

Once your pup's new coat is in place, Trott suggests a few short training sessions: "I recommend that your dog start getting used to winter clothes before wearing them. It can be too much for a dog to put on a winter coat. for the first time and leave him for a walk.”

"Instead, start with very short training sessions indoors," advises Trott. “You can cover your dog, give him a treat and immediately take his coat off. So your dog can gradually get used to the coat without fear.”

Before long, you'll both be heading into winter warm and ready for an adventure!
